Fly-free Carrots:
Having had bad results due to carrot root fly, I have taken to sowing carrots in deep troughs/pots and placing them on a stand. This means that the pots and troughs are above the fly's 'ceiling height' of 18-24". I haven't lost a single carrot to this pest since

The best piece of advice I can give to anyone is just not to become despondent if something goes wrong with whatever you are growing. One of my favourite sayings is 'there is always next year' . If something does go wrong and you don't know what, ask someone with experience (there are loads of experts on this forum and on local allotments) and try again.

If you are starting a new garden/allotment start digging at the top left of the plot and work your way across, don't do as so I did and so many do and start in the middle, you'll never do it.
