  • Which/whose onion sets and garlic?

I'd really like to get onions and garlic in the ground in the next month. Real Seeds doesn't do onion sets (are heritage onion sets a contradiction in terms?) or garlic, so can anyone recommend a good place to get them from? I can pick them up in the supermarket no bother, but I wondered if there was A Better Way?
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

Got my "Autumn Planting Onions, Garlic, shallots n broad beans from "Marshalls" doing some good duo deals too!

Don't you have any local garden centres or Wilkinsons?

No Wilkinsons or Marshalls, but I hear a Wilko's will be opening in Hereford. We have several garden centres. If it doesn't make much odds what I get, I'll just pick up whatever I see on my travels.

Marshall's are not a chain of stores but a well known seed company. I have used them myself for many years and find their products and service excellent. Google Marshalls Seeds.

I usually grow the onion Senyshu Yellow over the winter. I just pick up some from the garden centre, as I only want one packet (about 50 sets) I don't think it is worth paying for postage.
Don't grow, or eat, garlic so can't help you there.

I grow Senyshu onions ever year, have done setts and seeds depending on how organised I am in August when the seeds need to be sown. Bit busy this year so I planted setts at the weekend.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Hi. I got a few sets from different sources. Japanese onion (50) and some garlic (2 bulbs) from Wilkos. I don't remember the exact cost, but both were quite cheap and around £2. Also ordered Music garlic from the Really Garlicky Company...it's 80p per bulb plus P&P. Then managed to get some electric onion (100), Pikant shallots (15) and Yellow Moon shallots (15) from my local garden centre. They were only £2.49 per pack. The company is Gourmet Plaisir. Hope this helps.

I contacted a couple of well known seed companies online including Marshalls to ask a question about getting onions etc delivered in time for my daughter to bring across for me, but they all kept me waiting such a long time for a reply, if they bothered to reply at all, I've ended up buying from ebay again... Last time did so I'm sure I was conned on varieties, but this time I 'think' it's a nursery with physical premises, and the bulbs are pre-packaged and labelled by the supplier, so fingers crossed... I really wish the garden centres over here sold them in the autumn, I have no idea why they don't . Maybe I'll have to try selling them myself next year! Lol

Thanks everyone, and Potty for clearing that one up for me! There's an independent garden centre in a really awkward corner by a huge junction, so next time I'm in town on foot I'll nip in there and see what they have.

Alison you've hit the nail on the head - wish I'd thought about this in the summer and got some seeds on the go.

Order some seeds now, and put them away in the August page of your diary (I use a concertina organiser to keep my seeds in, stored by the month).

I haven't grown onions yet as I don't have a huge amount of space and they are quite to cheap to buy but I have been growing shallots and I love growing garlic.

I tried shallots from sets but didn't have much luck with those.

This year I did shallots from seed and they were great. Will be doing the same this year and sowing seed pretty early next year.

I get my garlic from The Garlic Farm it is a bit pricey but I've had much better results from their garlic than from the other stuff I've tried (local supermarket, saved and local GC). Might have just been luck but I've stuck with them!

Through trial and error, arrived at purple wight for garlic. Beautiful, big cloves that really flavoursome. proper bollywood cloves. Vampiric senshyu onions, radar and electric for a big experiment.

That's a really good idea Two Sheds. I keep my seed packs in a disorganised heap in an old tea box!

I usually try to find a garden centre that sells them individually (by weight) as I don't always want a bag of 50.

Might be too far for you, but I know Millbrook garden centre (near Monmouth) does separates, and quite cheap too. Last year I bought 20 red, 20 white and 20 brown (can't remember the varieties!

I think it tends to be the independent garden centres that do this.
