sweet potatoes

I planted sweet potatoes earlier in the year, they look ok but I havent dug them up yet.

I just wondered if anyone else has grown them and if they have been successful, thats my first question. Secondly , has anybody tried keeping any parts if the plant to grow on the following year and if course, is this possible?

My own plants, the leaves are starting to turn yellow so I am thinking its probably nearly time to dig them up?!

Any info would be useful

I'm interested too, I put some plants in my allotment and had an experimental 'furtle' today, there's definitely something there but I thought I'd leave them until frosts are forecast. I got mine as plants from Suttons (?) not as slips. I also put some in my daughters conservatory but they don;t seem to have come to anything, just lots of top hamper.

I have some to, the advice I was given today, from 'old allotment chap', was, if it's still green and looks like it's still growing, leave them in the ground as long as possible, cos they will be growing underground. Must say tho,am tempted to have a wee look.

I've not grown them before, and they did go in late, but as plants, not slips. So we'll see.

The ones I grew last year were pants, just not enough warmth or sunlight although they did flower, fingers crossed they will have done better this year. I saved a tuber from last years crop to produce slips for this year, which I've grown in a couple of large pots. They are still looking green and I'll leave them as long as possible before harvesting.

If your plants are still looking ok, although it might be too late if they are looking yellow, you can try taking some stem cuttings and growing them on in the house overwinter to get an earlier start next year. Or save a tuber to use for new plants next spring. They usually start into growth quite easily as they haven't had any anti-sprout stuff applied.

Oh that's good, we don't need flowers, just some tubers!

I've grown them a few times and never had any flowers - the crops are never great but, so long as they're grown under cover, you can get a few good tubers and it's something different.

You're a long way south of me though and it's been a good summer so you might be fine (fingers crossed for you)
