  • True Grit...?

Normally when planting veg at this time of year (actually, at just about any time of year) I put out Slug Off granules, or something similar, round my seedlings. This protects them against the snails that live in thousands at my plot.
Sadly, at present I cannot get any locally, and can't afford to buy online what with the crippling postage to the "Scottish Highlands".
But I noticed a reference by someone online to putting out horticultural sand round their seedlings - a commercial grower, so hopefully someone who knows what works !
My question is - given that I've tried eggshells and found them not to work, is there any form of sand that any of you guys have tried that works well against snails and slugs ?
I've got drawerfuls of coarse builder's sand just waiting here to get thrown on the garden...

Coffee grounds never worked for me, maybe the Cheshire slugs and snails have posh tastes . For me wood ash has been the best if you have a real fire....

I found beer traps to be effective & although I don't drink it may be a waste of beer.......

I'm surprised that "beer" isn't sold at a premium as "Slugdrowner". All you'd have to do would be relabel it and sit back and watch the £££s adding up............

It'd be handy if you could get it in a concentrate form that could be diluted down with water.................now where did I put that patent application.........

We need a way to collect beer dregs from pubs and concentrate them, then sell them on.
Ticks lots of green boxes for recycling waste too

I recycle beer waste, but use it mainly as a compost activator
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I remember my auld Dad being told that beer was a good feed for his leeks. He was on the local CIU club committee so dutifully lugged bucket after bucket of stale beer from the club to our house where he had his leek trench. It was about a mile walk to the house so after umpteen trips the poor auld bugger was knackered at the end of it.
Anyway... he finished up having the back garden stinking like a brewery and rotted all his leeks off at the stocking tops!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
