Too late for onion and shallot sets?

Hello all,

I had planned to plant out my onion and shallot sets in October, but been horribly ill.

Is it too late to plant them out now? Am sure there's going to be a frost in the next few days. I could plant them in modules in the greenhouse, which I usually do with my spring sowing, just never put them out so late before.

Got a feeling we might be in for a hard winter.

Don't know the 'right' answer I'm afraid, but I only put some of mine in a week or so back, and they seem fine... hope I'm not tempting fate saying that! I'm putting shallots in the polytunnel over the next few days because they got overlooked - maybe you could cover your onions if you're worried about the weather? I know some ppl on here do plant their onions in modules to over-winter, where they're protected from the worst of the frosts etc but get a head start on growing their roots? Look at it this way - if you don't plant them, they definitely won't grow! Give it a shot, what have you got to lose

As you live in London even with my limited knowledge I would say it will be fine ( that's going to make it snow tomorrow)
A lot of whats written is covering the whole of the UK and massive difference between Cornwall and Glasgow with temperatures and sunshine and London benefits from heat from homes etc raising the temp
Go for it .... Whats the worse that can happen ........ You have to replant in spring?

all mine are still in moduls,growing roots,some have aprox 1.5 in green shoots,their area is not quitwe ready yet,am sure they will mostly do fine,i thought they were only planted so early for the cold to split the cloves off the garlic,

most of them will still sprout in the moist bag,only a bit bent

I'm going to put some in pots in the GH and a few outside, when I remember
