slightly off subject, we have a few wild pear trees beside the veg patch(to help the local bugs to breed and survive the winters) and have several feeders hanging to keep the birds going, the other day I sprayed some peanuts with oil and then sprinkled them with paprika before putting them into the feeders, half an hour later I saw mommy squirrel sitting there, with three youngsters beside her, all lined up, she was pulling faces, so she had been trying the peanuts, I hope she teaches them to go elsewhere now, they left after about 10mins so hopefully they wont be back, they had already ruined 3 feeders so far this winter so I wont miss them.....

I was reading an article today about making fat balls & apparently a touch of chilli has the same effect.

only if they have a fetish for the vindaloo strength food, we bought another couple of those squirrel proof feeders today as the tree rats had virtually chewed through the wire netting holding the nuts, and we put extra oil and paprika on the "unprotected" nuts, we have found that the "protected" feeders save us upwards of 60% of the bird food as we also get swamped by jackdaws etc....we spent more today on bird stuff than I did on the garden all year(hanging head in shame).......

been there, done it, during my military service but not very filling, probably need 2 for a good meal, probably like rabbit, no fats so you could eat them each day and die of malnutrition, but would make the Barbie more interesting, maybe with some roasted peanuts as a side dish...........
as birds have no tongue (for tasting) it doesn't really matter how hot you make the nuts by covering them with paprika....
