Hi Cutecumber!
I'm glad you've shared their untidy growth habit with us! The ones that do bother to pick up and start 'behaving' in my greenhouse, I shall now be aware that they are going to badly 'misbehave'....!
I'll do a taste comparison test at the end of it all between San Marzano and Romano, once they're preserved, and post up which one is my personal preference out of the two?

If they're anything like the beefsteaks I've grown, "interesting" is definitely the word for their growth habit!
So far, my San Marzano's aren't doing anything very unusual - they're only just producing side shoots, but so are my Big Boy and Brandywine. I've grown the last two before and I struggled to support them.
Better invest in some extra canes, I think!

I grew a couple of San Marzano last year and was very pleased with them, no problems with strange growth etc and I pinched out all the side shoots as normal. Maybe I was just lucky but I found they made some very tasty pasta sauces which is why I've grown some again this year.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
