Please identify this for me?

New to veggie growing

Ive just taken on a new allotment and would like to know what this is which has been planted by the previous owner?

Are the green shoots in the soil the same as the bulb . If so, it looks like some sort of onion or shallot.

Yes they are.......thats was a little one I dug up by mistake!

I did! Ive planted shallots today myslef, so I wonder if they will pop up looking the same

Shallot sets are usually a bit bigger than onion sets - but they can both be treated the same way.

looks like some sort of onion or shallot.

Smell them. If they don't smell oniony, they ain't onions (I'm thinking they look more like iris reticulata leaves: they're too spiky for onions)

As your previous allotment tennant appears to be a bit of a flower lover, and if the sets dont smell of onions, they could be Iris corms. (Like wot i planted last year for a wonderful show of cut flowers)

I'll sniff one and let you all know if it's an onion! I would be surprised if it was simply because the previous tenant left a plan of what he grew this year and onions were elsewhere on the plot.

So perhaps they are iris!
