I'm growing some french beans, the biggest seedlings are about 6'' high now but some of them seem to be cracking? any idea what could cause this? they are getting plenty of water and sunshine as they are inside the window lol.
Not sure what you mean by cracking , Salina, but if they are inside the window, are they frying ? Mine are living outside. Can you tell us more, or show us a pic ?
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
hmm, nevermind, it seems to have stopped now lol. basically the new leaf things were sort of fat looking and were cracking in half.
they seem to be pretty hardy little things, yesterday I accidentally broke the top of one (I'm so clumsy lol) and this morning it had grown back!
The "cracking" you've described is perfectly normal. Beans germinate and send up a shoot with (as you've said) a fat thing at the end. These are the cotyledon leaves which are basically the inside of the bean seed. They split into two and the actual growing point emerges from between them. They will eventually shrivel away after they've served their purpose and you will get proper leaves growing.
