I've just sown some squash and lettuces - plenty of time for those. With the cabbages - it may depend on which ones you were growing but I always Go for it - nothing ventured and all that!
Get yourself some debris netting or enviromesh and cover your seedlings to keep the pigeons away and some organic slug pellets to sprinkle underneath it for the slugs.
    Keep smiling
Thank you Caroline, can I ask what debris betting is and is it expensive? I spent all evening clearing bind weed from beds and installed a make shift pond. I'm much better thank back still sore waiting did stitches to dissolve. Thank you did your support - I have better pics in Facebook - marks allotment as I do not know how to upload pics on here as I use my iPhone and Apparently theory appear small. Sounds like you've been busy on your plot have you any pics is love to see. Mark x

As VC has said, there's plenty of time for squash and courgettes and lettuce! Get those seed packets out. As for cabbages it depend which ones you want to sow - look on the seed packet. I've just sown some purple headed cauli, they have just popped through the surface, taken just 3 days to show. Good luck!
Hi Scarlet I'm ok thanks, both fully recovered.

I ended up buying plug plants and tonight noticed the centre of the destroyed cabbages growing - unsure if this means they will be ok or not- any thoughts? Have you any pics if your plot x

      • Hello everyone sorry I've not been on for what seems like forever, I've been battling slugs and birds eating everything - I'm a little worried about my potatoes and would love some advice . My earliest are going yellow with brown spots - should I be worried?

Also I'm so disappointed with myself I thought my beds would be full but I've an entire empty bed and I just don't know what I expected. I've got beet root, beans pots onion garlic n celery and courgette growing but that's it and cucumbers n melon and toms in gh. If someone can tell, me how I upload pics instead from my iPhone I'd appreciate it.

              • There have been a couple of threads recently on spotty potato leaves, one of them mine, the general conclusion with mine (which were masses od tiny spots smaller than yours) seemed to be a lack of magnesium or food in general. however I have treated them as if it was early blight (Bordeaux spray) and also Epsom salts and tomorite.
Unfortunately yours looks more like early blight than mine, I would be spraying the unaffected ones asap.

                  Morning Bill

Thanks for replying I have no idea what blight is and what do I have to do, I've taken a look at most of my neighbours and they have it too a few haven't just happened almost overnight as they looked liked they were drooping at their tops so I've started watering them.

Does this mean there in edible ? Any advice what I need to buy and what to do id be so grateful - and does this mean I can't plant anything in the soil again?

                  • I think you need to do a lot of googling, and saying it was early blight was just my opinion so don't take drastic action until other grapes pitch in.
But last year I had late blight and it spread to my tomatoes too, it is very nasty and very fast. Early blight seems not to be quite so bad, you can cut off the foliage and harvest what you have already got, burn the foliage or send it to the tip. You can spray but more as a preventative, Bordeaux mix is copper sulphate and considered organic by many. Best use the spuds quickly because it can spread to the tubers and they rot in storage. What do your neighbouring plot holders think?
You may chooses to wait a while, if it is blight you will soon get rotten patches on the main stems.

Search for blight on here there are some very good threads.

They say you shouldn't grow spuds for four years after blight, but unless all your neighbours do the same that is pointless. You can eat any undamaged spuds. Think about growing resistant potatoes like Sarpo Mira, they really are resistant but not the tastiest.

Amazing thank you it's just as I haven't got a clue what I'm doing being my first year I noticed mine then popped to see a neighbour and she had it. I've walked into my neighbours and one looks like he had it and has pulled all his spuds up , my next door neighbour hasn't said a word yet he told another guy he's had problems. - I want to cry

                      • Don't cry until it is confirmed as blight. To me it looks as though they have just run there course & will soon be ready to be lifted.

                        • Hmm, doesn't look like blight to me either from the pics, I'm with BM I think they are nearly ready to be lifted. When did you put them in?

It looks like just the lower leaves that have the problem? Top leaves look fine..
