Can you compost raspberry canes

I am going to be cutting down my autumn raspberries and was wondering if I can compost them or am I risking unwanted secondary plants?

I compost mine. Usually cut them into short lengths and put in the Dalek.

I chopped mine down one year and left the prunings in a heap - by the time I remembered to move them they had rooted, so I'm a bit wary of them now LOL

Mine are so dead by the time I get round to pruning them that secateurs are not required - they snap into pieces.
I have pulled up canes that had run in the wrong direction and piled them in a heap - I now have a completely new raspberry jungle.

As an addenidum, adenidum, ad...oh as an add on, I planted 4 autumn canes about 3 weeks ago and they are sprouting new shoots! should I rub these off before the frost gets them and maybe damages the plant?

I usually leave then to their own devices Bill, apart from cutting the dead ones back in Spring..

Yep I don't cut the canes back till next year so they are good and dead by the time I get to them

Mine haven't even when I've stuck them in the ground. They shooted but didn't root.

I have a huge stack of them piled up that I've left for insects to live in. That's my excuse anyway but it's a good one!

Yes, compost everything.

They will root if they aren't dead though, so leave them on the path for a week or so before they go (chopped) on the heap. Me, I tend to cut them down in late Feb (they protect the soil somewhat if they're left up all winter), chop them into 3" lengths and leave the bits on the ground as a mulch
