Over wintering onions

We been having cold very dry weather round my way, so my question is should i be watering my onions and if yes should it be a lot or sparingly?

I didn't last year and got a good crop although we had a dry winter and a dry but cold spring which meant Spring planting was delayed. Neither did two of my friends and both had good crops although some others had poor ones. All 3 of us had prepared the planting beds well with plenty of compost dug in before planting. This years are showing well just now as are my friends.

Where are your onions planted Andrew? Pots or open ground?

Open ground, I dug plenty of compost in when planting them. They look a bit unhealthy, the top have fallen over, which they've always but they look a bit unhappy to me, bearing in mind I am new to grow my own veg

Everything will droop a bit when it's very cold. It's usually nothing to worry about, plants recover from it.

Watering? No, not in winter. You're likely to cause more freezing damage if you water. Dryer is safer

Don't tend to water them unless we have a very, very dry spell spring summer. Mother nature waters them as she wishes uptil then.

As TS says, they will droop a bit anyways but mine also take a bit of a battering from the wind..
They always recover though..

Some of my Japanese onions pictured a week ago. They're under a mesh mini tunnel thing which keeps off the worst of the wind chill but I've not watered them at all and they seem to be doing fine.
