onions going yellow!

Well I think my kelsae seedlings have a problem!!!!

THey are approx 3 inches tall, one per module under a grow light. (Pic to follow).

They have 2 leaves. THe problem is that the 2nd leaf is turning yellow on the tip, and slowly dying back!

But the 1st leaf is still fine.

Any thoughts please?

I don't use growlights myself but I imagine it will be be a balance between light, temperature,soil moisture and atmospheric moisture? If any of these are in the wrong proportion I suppose it could lead to trouble? If they are growing as you have shown them, with no surround to hold moisture then atmospheric moisture shouldn't be a problem
Also,if the seedlings were pricked out into the modules there will be short lapse before growth starting again which could account for the plant shedding its oldest leaf?

Hi Snadger,

They are growing under lights in the spare box room. I moved them into the conservatory just to take the photo (as lots of light in there)!

THe seedlings were planted in the modules in the picture, they have not been pricked out yet.

Maybe they need potting on, and then they might perk up?

I really hope they will!

Looks like the "seed" leaf dying off. Difficult to tell which is the seed and which is the true leaf on onions!

Hmm - puzzled then. Are the roots ok? The remaining leaf looks ok so I don't think I'd panic just yet. My onions are in their packet waiting for my student son to return to uni so I can take over his bed/ my propagating bench again!

No, that's the seed leaf. New onion leaves come up from the middle of the plant. They look normal to me, if a bit wet.

well I removed one and the roots are white, long and quite wirey. (Is that even a word)?

Yes the other leaf is fine.

Should I pot on? And hope for the best?

No, don't pot them on until the roots have filled the pots. You'll only set them back. Just give them as much light and air as you can, and don't overwater them.

I have some onions in the polytunnel doing a similar thing, in my case it is just too damp in there, I havent watered for months yet everyting is sodden, I have even had a dehumidifier in there. I cut off any yellow leaves to avoid rot and then they seem to go on ok from there.

No fear of damp in the box room though! Temperature in there is always between 16 - 20 degrees.

Maybe I overwatered?

That'sthe seed leaf dying back and is perfectly normal. Your compost looks to be a tad dry but could just look like that on the photograph. Some of your onions are a bit bent on the stem. Best to try to straighten them as early as possible
