  • Minipop Sweetcorn

I've just had a visitor who has very kindly bought me some minipop plants from their local garden centre.

They are in an 8in pot but I have about 20 plants, all clustered together.

I doubt they're large enough to go outside yet.

Should I separate them out into their own pots, or leave them for a bit?
I was under the impression that sweetcorn doesn't like to be messed with.

    Thanks

    OWG

There's quite a bit on the forums on minipops. Try searching for the name of the plant you want to grow (search is in the navigation strip at the top). But I was reading this thread yesterday which I think may have the answers you're looking for:

I don't think they like root disturbance OWG so if you are going to separate them I would plant them in the ground rather then go for 2 moves. Mine are planted out and seem to be getting on fine.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I started some in trays, then read about not disturbing the roots! Shoots looked healthy so I decided to go for it and plant them out (they were about 5cm tall). One week on they're doing fine - growth has been surprising.
          Good luck.

I usually grow my sweetcorn in cell trays and then transplant straight onto the lottie. Last year's were left in the cells far too long, but still grew well and gave a decent crop. Obviously you need to be careful when splitting from a crowded pot, but they should be OK. If you have no frost forecast and they are at least 5" tall you could plant straight out onto the garden or allotment.

I tried planting some sweetcorn in pots, and put it under the cold frame. It's been 3 weeks, and still nothing? Would it be too cold? I know the seed may have been last year. does anyone know if sweetcorn is difficult to grow from the kernel? I might go buy some plug plants...

We had no problems with growing sweetcorn from seeds - first time as well. Maybe the temp isn't high enough?

We've grown both a baby corn variety and Conqueror variety and both germinated fine.

As for planting out - all 4 varieties are now down on the allotment, and have been for a few weeks now.

We bought some Minipop plants and they had unfortunately been sown in the same strip - think there was an average of nine plants per strip. When we came to plant them out at the allotment the roots had completely twined around one another, so i had to pull/rip them apart!

Fortunately, they seem no worse for it, and are growing fine now. So whilst they may not like root disturbance, its not a killer - at least in my limited experience!
