  • Peas and others

    Hi all,

I planted out some mange tout just over a couple of weeks ago and so far nothing. The packet says they should have germinated by now but there is no sign. I have planted them in a large bucket/pot in my plastic green house.

At the same time I also planted carrots and raddishes, but I think I may have got the labels mixed up. In one of the pots I have lots of little seedlings with round flat leaves, so I would guess these are the radish? If so, where are my carrots? And my spring onions (which I planted about a week and a half ago) arn't doing anything either.

But a couple of my potatoes have just broken the surface today. Yay.

Anyway, this is my first go at growing anything other than potatoes, so am I just panicking for nothing?

    Thanks very much

The flat leaves are definately radish, due to the see sawing weather, it has effected the arrival of spring and the growth of sume seeds, you could always leave your peas longer or just dig down in one to make sure the seed hasn't rotted due to over watering (or lack of).
    Best wishes

Blossom carrots always take longer to come up so don't worry. How deep did you plant the peas?

I planted my onions ages ago and they are only just coming up this week, of 11 seed only 3 are through. I did use old seed though so not expecting 100%. It was more about trying out container onions than getting a good crop. However, last weekend I sow cabbage, x2 varieties of sprout and have 99% germination already! I'm very chuffed with those!

          Hi all,

I can't rmember how deep I planted them, whatever it said on the packet, but one of them has come up now, yay. I am obviously just panicking too soon.
          Thanks again

Last weekend I planted sprouts (2 varities) and cabbage seeds. This weekend I have 3 seed trays of healthy strong seedlings (for now!) 1 Week - I'm so excited and impressed!

Somethings are quicker than others Clarea1. Brassica's are one of them unless the temperature gets too high then they won't sprout, Lettuce are another one.

                    Carrots

                    Hi Blossom,
My carrots in a pot took ages to germinate, I sowed them around 10/03 & they only appeared last week about 28/03 which seemed longer than in the past. The leaves should be long, skinny ovals at first as these are the seed leaves, you'll get the 'feathery' leaves as they grow more.

Yay, another mange tout has sprouted and the carrots too.

Could anyone tell me if i should earth up my potatoes as soon as I see the shoots, or let them grow a bit first?

                      Thanks

With the continued frosts, I would earth up as soon as you see them.
