  • chilli plant identification

my friends mum bought this plant about 3 weeks ago from Sainsburys.

Strange time to be selling fully ripe chilli plants

Any ideas what variety it is?

    I was thinking tobasco?

No idea myself, the best would be to go back to the store, either look at other plants for a label, and ask the store to trace its identity,

There are so many different chillies out there you'd seriously struggle to identify it

Cayennes are much longer and pendulous (hanging down) whereas this has an upright habit, but they're way too big to be tabasco chillies. Maybe Serrano, or one of these hybrid types? To be honest, it's hard to ID chillies as they interbreed pretty freely, meaning there's tons of hybrids and stable varieties around.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about the type, just keep it if you enjoy the chillies.

I have one like that from B&Q last month: the label just says "chilli"

I very much doubt you'll get a positive ID. Even with a few features to go on (upright fruits, size, shape etc), there's no really distinguishing features to separate this plant from a hundred other very similar ones. Your best bet is to enquire at source.

it is very annoying, that the variety was not on the label.

Ah well, it does not matter...

                Thanks for looking!

Uhm, you've neglected to mention something important, how do they taste?

Hi, sorry if I'm bringing up an old thread here, but just in case you wanted to know the variety is 'Super Chilli'

                      Full sunlight
Water often (although in my experience not too much!)
Encourage new fruit by picking all or most of the red ones
