compost stuff growing

I found some onions in the compost today while turning among other things, some were solid and the soft ones I chopped up and threw back in, you recon these are safe to eat?

Also why do you thing stuff is growing in there? There was potatoes with roots radishes and what looked like a turnip?

Any ideas

It's the perfect growing space for root veg. Warm, dark and moist. Plus tons of nutrients!

You've obviously been putting whole vegetables in your compost instead of using them and just composting the peelings.

I once had a good crop of tatties from a compost heap from discarded peeling with live eyes.

I have two bins and the one thats full I keep a dump bag over it so it gets hotter and decompose quicker hopefully. I didnt really think that old veg or peelings would survive i thoughtthey would of been ate by the worms i put in there in the summer.

I once chucked a "dead" honeysuckle plant into my compost bin. Later in the year I couldn't work out what all these roots and shoots were until a few leaves opened. I dug it out and put it back where it belonged.

Unless you keep your compost really hot, things will grow in it. This includes bulbs and other viable pieces of root or stem as well as seeds including weeds. Its one reason why you should never put perennial weeds onto a compost heap.
