Ideas needed for garden plan

Hi all

The above is a pic of my garden as it currently stands. My veg patch used to be where the ? Is but as it didn't get enough sun it has now been moved to the other side of the garden. My question is what do I do with the ? section now? It doesn't get sunlight until mid afternoon in the middle of summer and our porch and kitchen window look out on to it. It's about a meter and a half square and has no soil (it's all brick and god knows what from the renovation before we moved in- I used to grow in containers) .
The problem is I don't want it it end up a forgotten part of garden and think it could be very useful. I just don't know what for yet! Any ideas welcome

There are quite a few plants which grow in shade. Under my living room window is similar, it never gets any sun but I have lots of ferns, fatsia and astilbe off the top of my head. I have tried hostas but the snails won. How about a stumpery?

You can grow acers in pots in partial shade as long as they are sheltered from the wind too

My shade corner this year will be going to containers with checkerberry, mints and heathers

I would put the shed there.

I said that but then it would block the only natural light into the kitchen so not to keen on doing that

Maybe some more decking or slabs with some pots for shady plants and a couple of chairs so you can sit in the shade on those hot summer days?

Fill it with a raised bed. Plant out with hardy fuchsias, they don't mind the shade, and will flower till the first frosts.



Underplant with dog tooth violets (erythronium), winter aconites and snowdrops for spring interest and for the bees, and through the summer months, you could dot lettuces around in it, they would like the shady, cooler position.

If I understand it correctly that means your shed is on the south-most corner of your garden?!?

If so I'd probably move the shed and have more veg down that end or put a greenhouse there.

Alternatively salad crops would grow well in tubs in that corner.

Swap the decking for more growing space.

I'd swap everything for more growing space but not sure the rest of the household would be too happy!

So I'm looking at plants for this part of the garden and some are listed at liking partial shade and some as light shade. What's the difference?

How much sun does the area get? Partial shade is defined as an area which recieves 2-4 hours of sun a day, this is all year round. If the area receives less than 2 hours of direct sun a day you need plants happy in full shade.

If the left hand side gets the sun then move your shed onto the decking to free up some more veg space.
