or has anyone had success using shop bought sweet potatoes?
I know they do chit after a while if left..

Also if anyone has seeds for sweetcorn the multicolored heirloom heritage varieties (I realize Ive left it a bit late to ask)

    Thanks!

Grow your own slips from supermarket ones. Try to buy organic ones and soak, soak overnight and put into jars with water so that half of a potato submerged. I place mine on top of cooker fan extractor, so its warmer in there when cooking Within a week you can expect to see roots growing, later the slips. Just pull the grows off when about 7-8inches long and stick them into water. They will produce roots. Than plant.

I've bought sweet potato slips from Thompson & Morgan twice. The first lot were fine and I got a decent crop in the greenhouse.

The second lot were not happy when I received them. I rang up and complained twice. No joy.

I did not get a crop off them. They blamed the weather.

They have not had an order off me for any thing since and they never will.

Damn, I'm at the three week stage (lots of roots) and was hoping to see some shoots!

Hello Irish-Veg, I'm in south Kildare and got some plants/slips in Johnstown Garden Centre , it is approx 25 miles from my hope, check thier web site later in the year , they can be ordered online and delivered to your location. I grew them for the first time last year and will be growing a lot more this season
                  cheers

Are you not rather early with your slips? Seem to think I planted mine out in June?

I have to admit, I started some off before Christmas from my own saved "seed" and one of those has got really nice roots and shoots appearing. That's on the window so they develop nice and slowly for now. Two of the potatoes grew lots of roots but nothing is happening shoot wise although they look as if they might! I started another one about three weeks ago and that is going nicely in the root department.

I bought slips last year and didn't break even crop wise so I don't intend to buy again for a very long time if I can help it. One of the reasons I thought the yield was lower than I'd have liked (even in the tunnel) was that the slips arrived so late in the year. Hence why I have started early.

Any way I-V, I'm hoping to have more plants they I can use so if you draw a total blank PM me in a month or so. If I can only send you one to bulk up from for next year it will be a start.
