beefsteak tomato recommendations..

Hi all.
This year I'm going to try to grow nice, large tomatoes..big enough for a sandwich!
Heres the deal..

Outside, semi sheltered, good fertile ground.
I want them big enough to slice in sandwiches
I'd like if possible to have round fruits rather than wrinkled/strange shapes

..has anyone any ideas as to a variety!?

You may struggle with beef steaks outdoors they often benefit from a longer season. I grow Amish Paste in my tunnel and although very scruffy looking are a fab fruit.

Thanks for the input.
I have been growing in the greenhouse but even with it shaded, and with the window and door fully open the temperatures are just too high (full sun all day, door and window never in line for the wind) and the skins on my toms are really thick and tough to the point of being unpleasant!

I may have to settle for a 'large' variety!?

Out of interest what varieties have you grown in the past? Does it really have to be a beefsteak tomato? There are smaller ones that are still good sliced in a sandwich

Just fancied growing something larger this year, probably will grow a plant or two of some of the above again this year.

Nicky's Nursery have a fantastic selection of beefsteak tomato seeds and the prices are better than all the major suppliers. I've grown a lot of different ones over the years and one thing I've found is that they all seem more prone to blossom end rot than 'normal' tomatoes. The biggest I've managed was about 600g but I have to admit that I actually prefer tomatoes that look like tomatoes, both for flavour and ease of growing.

For slicing in to sandwiches, I would recommend Paul Robeson... Found it to be very tasty..

I dont eat them, but they who do eat them seem to like Costoluto Fiorentino and Marmande , I grow them outdoors, but start them in November under growlights to get a massive plant early, its not necessary though

I grow marmande and black krim outside in pots on the patio each year with success, they tend to fruit later than the smaller varieties and better than they used to do when grown in the greenhouse - I have no idea why.

I've grown Black Russian and Brandywine, both are cracking. Grown in an open south-facing culticave so they had shelter but not scorching heat. Black Russian were supposed to be normal sized, but were HUGE.

Definitely recommend Amish Paste. Nice big tomatoes, more plum shape than beefsteak. Check them out on real seeds website. Theres a picture of one slice covering a whole piece of bread.

Not sure how they'll cope outside, might be fine.
