I sow mine April-ish in newspaper pots and leave them in the GH they get planted out when they're a decent size. That way seems to work for me.
      Location....East Midlands.

Yep beetroot is not a problem and being related to Swiss chard infuriates me even more!!

Going to try it again this year if no success might just write it off and grow something I will end up cropping.

Just throw it on the ground, turn your back and walk away. That's about what I do - I still have last year's plants growing away. I let them self seed too...............
          Is this very infuriating D?

It just goes no where I've started them in pots and planted them out at a reasonable size it does nothing then dies the biggest success with them was when I planted them out in a pot!!

In fact I may trail this and see if I get success either way

Two years ago I bought one late in the season from the garden centre and it grew massive and lasted all winter, this last year I grew from seed and whilst I got a couple of small plants neither have done as well the year before.

However I must say all I've done is sowed them in small pots in the mini greenhouse and then planted them in the ground and that's it.

Darcy, buy a couple of plants, rather than seeds, much better, ( well in my view) 2 plants, much better than the row of seeds that I tried to grow last year.

sounds like you are you trying to grow it in winter? i kept reading you could, but i dont think you can at least not where i live in the midlands. I have some left from the summer, but i dont see much growth.

they grow quite well for me from seed in the summer ,i`m in birmingham, i grow them in pots, the slugs destroyed so much of my crops last year, but half my swiss chard still grew well, nice big leaves.. this year is`nt a war on slugs, its an end to them!!!
