Onions from Seed-

Each year I grow overwintering onions from both seeds and sets...
From seed I have always used Hi ball ( so far) and have sowed in late Summer and transplanted into the ground outside in late Autumn...Typically these can be ready to harvest a month or six weeks earlier than Spring sown ones..

This year I decided that as well as transplanting outside in late Autumn, I would prick some out into pots and keep them in the greenhouse to see how they did...
So far, they are doing well and will be transplanted outside once the weather settles..
The ones outside from the start have been knocked back a bit by the severe winds we have had since Christmas..

Looking good! I planted out onion sets last November and those onions are looking strong. I also tried to grow some from seed this spring but only about a third germinated. Those are now in the greenhouse in small pots, waiting to be planted out in a month, maybe two.

I always do my onions from seed just for the choice of varieties and economics. Having 10% of 220 seeds fail is no big deal but 10% off £16 worth of onion sets starts to look rather pricey.
