It is really interesting. I get the impression many people on the Vine save seed successfully with less numbers of some of the plants. The Real Seeds web site gives information on seed saving for all (I think) the plants it sells seeds for and sends info with your seed parcel. I got my copy for 1p plus p&p and it was immaculate - I like it when recycling make sme smile!

It's a great book, learnt loads from it when I first got it though not looked at it recently. Thinking about it now I probably ought to look through it again as there is bound to be something I've forgotten over the years. I'd agree the Read Seeds web site is helpful too although more background information in the book and I like to understand the theory behind it all.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

They have an interesting business model - you buy some seeds from them and get instructions on how to save your own seeds so that you never need to buy more seeds from them again ...

Bit like the company that sold pumps that never went wrong in the Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. When everyone in the world had bought one of their pumps they quietly wound up the company

Not to miss the point of your joke but they are always developing their range of plants and trying new ideas out so there is nearly always something to tempt you. Also, I doubt if I'll ever be trying to do carrot seed saving or brassica seed saving but by buying from RS I know that if the world really does go base over tip at some point I can start saving straight away from their plants. Whereas, if I was growing F1s, I could save the seed but would have to go through a whole selection process to establish my own provenance of successful plants.

I admire people / companies that are prepared to have that kind of moral model - I suspect it works surprisingly often, but is tried rather rarely. They deserve to succeed

I agree , Back Garden Seed Saving is a lovely book, really useful information and I love reading about the heritage varieties in it.

Another good book although a bit more expensive is The Manual of Seed Saving. It's got a nice lot of photos, great info and I think well set out.
