  • Catch crop to plant now.

    Hi all.

I've got a veg bed that I'm planning to do sweetcorn and squashes in later in the year. Is there anything I can plant there now - that'd be ready to come out in time?

First early potatoes planted now should be ready to lift by the second week of June.

Salad crops (lettuce, radish, spring onions)

    Kelvedon Wonder peas.

Turnips and spinach are pretty quick.

Baby carrots or beetroots only need a couple of months!
Beets have the advantage that the leaves are yummy too.

I'd plant spuds in, as above - and on top of those, before they break through the surface a fast salad crop, different nutrient needs, so won't affect your spuds and as you earth up you'll be mixing the earth up after harvest anyway.

Works well for me, but I do have to watch for slug damage as the soil isn't warm enough for me to use nematodes yet.

Baby turnips (Tokyo type) would be ideal as they will both help you clear the ground and also give you dozens of sweet baby veggies long before the sweetcorn goes in. In fact, as you can even eat the greens from them too you get two crops for the price of one. You eat these at golf ball size or smaller.

Thanks for all the great ideas

I grew spuds there last year ) - so will leave those off, but I've got a whole pack of turnip seeds ,and i love them - so they will go in, with lettuce and spinach.
              :-)
