My spuds are all covered up, even the 18" high ones got a nice blanket on them. The ones planted in the ground I earthed up with compost, should have just put buckets over them. Next time ........

I've got fleece everywhere over potatoes and strawberries, and the runner beans have been brought in from the growhouse. Everything else is pretty hardy and well hardened off, so fingers crossed it will all be ok.
Slightly strangely, its ground frost that can occur when the air is still above freezing, and air frost that happens at zero, with the air frost being the one that is really damaging, although neither is good. Well I haven't managed to sort anything out so I will have to take my chances. All I have to worry about at the moment are my potatoes and rasp / strawberry flowers. Hopefully it will all be OK.Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I'm crossing my fingers that my potatoes and strawberries are ok. I can't move them inside because they are too heavy and I have no room anywhere anyway. The potatoes are earthed up to the top of the bags and off the ground on a pallet so hopefully that will help. The leaves are quite tall and I think I'd struggle to cover them anyway, even if I did have something to put over them. The strawberries are in a planter and they have straw keeping the soil in so that will have to do. My greenhouses are only the little plastic ones so I really hope I don't lose anything in those. I do have a few spare plants inside that I planted later but I will be gutted if I lose everything.
Hope everyone's produce survives any frosting that may occur this evening

Well the weather site claims it didn't go down below +6C last night, but I can see the windscreens of the cars opposite are slightly icy and there is the merest hint of frost on the roof even if I can't see any on the garden or fields (I'm not mug enough / keen enough to go outside and check at 6am).
Anyway, I covered most of what counts on the allotment and brought the tenderest stuff from the greenhouse into the conservatory last night so I'd have been disappointed if all that effort had been unnecessary!
Edit: have finally ventured outside to the allotment and that is bloomin' cold. I could feel the icy-ness on the sheeting as I unwrapped the stuff; really glad I took the time and trouble now.Last edited by Barking Postlethwaite; 03-05-2014, 07:20 AM.

Iciness on grass and garden table here in Hertfordshire. Mr CurlyGreen reports thermometer reading of 2.3 degrees outside in the shade at 7am so slightly colder than advertised. Had 2 greenhouse heaters on so hopefully all well there. Covered most of my spuds and half the flowering strawberries. I might get two batches which would be handy.

No frost on the lawn but the GH is only at 5C, everything looks OK in there. Glad I earthed up the potatoes at the Allotment
