Has anyone ever actualy measured how much MPC comes in a bag?

Today I filled a 35 litre bucket to the brim with MPC and it took the entire 60 litre bag! I didnt press it down just broke up the lumps as I filled it.
Now either the bucket is larger than 35 litres, which I doubt or I have been fiddled by the amount of compost to the tune of almost 100%.
This is compost from my local garden shop and is their own brand but the bags are no different to any of the makes that are available so I suspect I would get the same results from any of them. Steps need to be taken.

This is interesting is it not done on weight of 10 lts as it states something about compost may be wet at time of filling on some bags!

Take a photo Bill and ask them to explain it!!
You could offer to do the same thing at the garden shop to prove you're not swindling them!...let us know how you get on...there may be a free bag or two of compost in it for you!!!

I can understand the weight varying a lot with the water content, but if it says 60 litres thats what i should be getting. Before I go challenging the garden centre I will pour 35 litres into a bucket just to be sure. I will have to put a plastic bag in it because all these buckets have a lot of drain holes. My mission for tomorrow.

I wouldnt object if there was a 10% difference but 100% is pushing it.

I just had a look at pot sizes on the interwebby and there doesn't seem to be much difference between a 60 litre pot and a 35l pot. The 60l was 55cm diameter by 38cm deep, the 35l pot was 45cm diameter and 37cm deep, so maybe you're lucky and have got a 60l pot for the price of a 35l one rather than under-volume on the compost

I think it is something to do with the contents settling or being compressed after filling i.e. Being stacked at the garden centre or when on pallets being transported. Not making excuses but I think there is often a disclaimer on the bag somewhere, like on the cornflakes where it says "contents may settle".
Worst I ever bought was a compressed coir which was meant to make 3 times the volume when watered. Did it? Of course not. And it smelt rank and nothing grew well in it. Never again.

You could try filling the bag with 60l water too. If the bag doesn't take 60l of water it doesn't take 60l of anything.

This is why I wont go in all guns blazing, but I have some 45l pots from the same company and the 35l pots are definately smaller. Cant wait till tomorrow now lol.

As for "The contents may settle" I am expecting that to be their line of defence but I think if they threw hadfulls into the air all day they would be hard pushed to double its volume, not only that it is not packed tight but quite fluffy so obviously it hasn't done much settling. Also there is not a spare cubic centimetre in the bag, if it had settled it must have settled to somewhere and consequently left a space. curiouser and curiouser.

Good idea but I have had bags you can lift easily with one hand because they have dried out (they have small holes in the bottom and top) and then others I have to make my wife carry in lol.
