  • Will all garlic be lost? Penicillium Mould...

    Hi all,

I planted 4 different types of garlicfrom October to Jan. Its relatively free draining soil, albeit quite alkaline, with plenty of sun. The plants have come up really well, the earlier planting varieties looking quite thick and healthy. A couple of weeks back though I noticed a rogue bluebell growing in one of the rows - in the garlic planted in December - and so as gently as I could dug up the bluebell to relocate on the basis it may inhibit growth in the surrounding garlic bulbs. I've noticed that past few weeks the tips of my garlic going a bit yellow, I wasnt particularly bothered as after monsoon style rain its now quite dry there. I did put some chicken manure pellets down to give them a bit of a boost. This weekend though the two blubs closest to where the bluebell was have wilted over, entirely yellow. I pulled them up and found blue mould all over the cloves. Having looked online, I now suspect this is Penicillium mould. Is it likely I will lose the rest too?

I suspect that you have chopped the roots of the Garlic closest to the Bluebell, hence the dead Garlic, therefore mould.
I can not see any reason why this mould would spread to live tissue.
I would put the infected bulbs in the compost bin.
Feed the soil, not the plants.
    (helps if you have cluckies)
