    No, not really: they're a plant food, not a soil improver as such.
    Feed your soil, not your plants, is an oldie but a goodie: that means making as much garden compost & leafmould as you can.

    If your soil is very very poor you could build lasagne beds like we did at school

      Just double checking- your pH was crazy low, or crazy high? Low would be extremely acid, not alkaline!
