Never been able to grow "up"

I can't grow Brussels sprouts to save my life. Well, the plants will grow and get very tall. But I never seem to get any actual sprouts on them. Not that it has stopped me trying again this year though!

I've also never been able to grow a cauliflower to anything edible - the slugs and cabbage butterflies always get to them first. So I'm hoping that the veggiemesh will help me harvest at least one cauliflower this year!

Carrots - clay soil mostly without the soil bit - but I keep trying.
Spuds in bags - always teeny if at all
White cabbage - others are always fine.
Asparagus - year four and the spears are minuscule again. But at least they are alive. Maybe next year.

But my leeks are often the size of darning needles when they get planted out, yet the one I dug today was thicker than my wrist.

It doesn't ALL get hot anyway: it's usually the top middle, just below the surface, that gets hot. The rest of it is cooling down after the thermophilic bacteria have moved out.
Cooling down is desirable anyway, because only then can the worms, fungi etc survive to finish off the decomp process

Carrots, have tried fly resistant, raised up, next to onions or leeks, tried covered and garlic watering after picking even tried earthing up as with tatties also tried groWing in greenhouse, I just think the root fly loves me, ahh well, never give in, all the best to all.

I've never been able to grow cauliflowers or to get cabbages to make big hearts (probably because my garden is shady), or to grow aubergines (given up trying). I can't get most seeds to perform at all if sown in the soil - I start nearly everything in pots.

Agree about the leeks - if I was waiting to plant them out until they were pencil thickness I would be planting out in December or even March. Same with the spring onions - chives grow much bigger than spring onions, however I grow them.

No idea how to get an ordinary compost bin hot, which is why I bought a hotbin. Struggle to keep that above 30C in winter when there are no grass cuttings, which appear to be the magic answer to heating the thing to 60C.

The other thing I have never been able to do is picture what eth garden will actually look like when things are planted and growing. I always underestimate the space needed.

Stay on schedule, and be realistic about what I can actually achieve in the time available (always making grand plans, overthinking it, and then filing away the bits of paper for another day).
