rhubarb ready to pick

I have some rhubarb, that was at the allotment when we took it over.

Many of the 'stalks' are now easily 1ft long or over, and easily 1 inch across in 'girth'

THey are red in colour, but not a deep vibrant red.

Anyway, I was wondering when rhubarb can be pulled up?

Does your rhubarb normally go a vibrant red? Mine goes quite a rubbish colour more of a greeny red but still tastes good.? I suppose if you wanted to pull some to encourage a better growth on other stems you coukd pull and freze and use that rhubarb for baking?? Hope someone better comes along and can enlighten us

I have no idea how it is supposed to look!

I have simply aquired it from the previous allotment holder.

I might just pull 3 stalks up and try it!

You can pick it when ever it looks big enough to eat!!
Don't pull all the stalks from one crown as you'll weaken it.
The younger you pick it, the sweeter and more tender it is.
The colour of the stalk varies between varieties.
Keep picking it and it will continue throwing up new stalks - the more you pick the more you get

Dont eat the leaves. they are poisonous/toxic.

Remember to pick it by twisting and pulling the stems, don't cut them and leave stumps

My rhubarb tried to appear in Jan and Feb but was knocked back by the frost so now it has finally started growing steadily it is not quite ready for picking but soon ... soon I will have amazing fresh rhubarb!
