  • Onions and sulphur

I'm sure I've read somewhere about adding sulphur to the onion bed so the onions are more powerful.

    Does it work?

Sulphur is an acidifying agent for lowering the Ph.

Don't think it will have an effect on the taste?

I would think the taste of onions is dependant on the variety you grow. Of the ones I've tried, large show onions are usually mild and sweet. Torpedo onions are extra sweet. Shallots when I grow them are very suphurous as are some varieties of spring onions.

    Do you want powerful onions?

Usually the seed packet will describe their atributes.

The pungency of onions is due to sulphur compounds in them which is where the idea of adding sulphur came from. As I understand it most healthy soils contain enough so you shouldn't need to add any.

Like Snadger I grow several varieties and some you can almost bite into like an apple while others have a kick like a chilli !!
