  • One blueberry. More are turning blue now but this one was the leader of the pack

    • Purple podded peas - mealy, wrinkled, horrid. Too big, methinks.

I grew purple mangetout for the first time this year (Shiraz) and they are horrid - a complete waste of space. They were tasteless eaten raw as young pods, tolerable in stir fries and just about edible eaten as ordinary peas picked young. By the time they had got to any sort of size, mealy, wrinkled and horrid is an excellent description.

              • Dwarf Borlotti Beans, looked beautiful, once cooked they went just 'green', but tasted delicious.

Wonder why they grow in such pretty colours, then just go green. Anyone know?

                • It will be to do with the chemistry of the coloured molecules which make these veg different. When they are heated the coloured molecules will decay either into something green or into colourless parts leaving the underlying green visible. I suspect it is the 2nd of these. Purple colouration is known to "mop up" free radicals - that means that it is a fairly reactive molecule itself, so it is not really surprising if it is destroyed by cooking.

Picked my aubergine today - the plant has suddenly started looking extremely sick (it was a little wilted yesterday, today it looks half dead). The fruit was about the size of a large egg, and tasted very nice.

                  • Stem/asparagus lettuce/celtuce - stringy and bitter. Pick younger and peel more. Today was salad, tomorrow will give it a whirl in a stir fry.

                    • Picked my first potatoes. They will be traveling to sunny Rhyl ( North Wales ) with me tomorrow along with all the other veg I picked today. So I can cook my grandparents a roast with my home grown veg.
