  • baby slugs & snails & puppy dogs tails.....

    Hi,

I`ve already seen my first baby slugs & snails while doing some work in the garden, I had so many problems with them last year, has anyone else noticed them yet? I`ve started using nematoads & also making an electric 9v fence to try & stop them. similar to this Electric Garden Slug Fence : Staple wires to raised bed, connect battery, and test with meter or slug what are other people using to try & stop them?

In my small garden I also have the puppy dog - who is fascinated by snails and will bring them in to munch on - so I have had to resort to the killing jar (saline water) as well as a bit of hurling over the fences (antisocial, I know, but most of the neighbouring gardens are a bit derelict).
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I grow my veggies in my back garden - I was out tidying and weeding at the weekend and as well as finding the crèche of babies I also found the parents and there mates having a party!

They also invited their snail neighbours that were huge!!

I'm trying copper impregnated slug, snail and weed matting under vulnerable pots and trays of seedlings, having had success with copper tape. I've also been round with the nematodes, and I've found a few really sick looking slugs wandering about. There has definitely been less damage than usual to my spring bulbs and to some of my primulas. Although its early to say, seedlings (carrot, spinach and cabbage) plus strawberries in pots on the matting are undamaged, strawberries in a pot without a mat and seedlings in the soil (kohlrabi and turnip) are definitely being nibbled. I did find a black caterpillar on the strawberries though, which could account for the damage there.

You do know they'll come back?

Paint numbers on them before you lob them.

And just think of the poor neighbours.

I agree, my experience is that they will come back. Few years ago I 'liberated' a bag of snails into a hedgerow about 50 metres from my house. I thought there'd be plenty for them to eat there, and they wouldn't be near anyones gardens. But in the following days I noticed a snail trail which led directly from the hedgerow back to my garden again.
I subsequently read that they can find 'home' from up to half a mile away.

I will have to find some nail varnish I don't want anymore and paint some up and lob them!
