I have small plants of Celeriac and fennel and no room in the garden so what size pots do I need? I am guessing a minimum of 12 inches. Will they be ok in normal potting compost? should I add anything. I seem to remember growing them before but in the soil.

Fennel is a big plant ... and I figure you need rather a lot of Celeriac for a "crop" thus worrying about "how many" pots you will need, rather than the size of them! Being a root I think it would be a lot happier in the ground, but I've never attempted to grow it in pots so better I shut up!Last edited by Kristen; 19-04-2014, 10:10 AM.K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

Celeriac is a massive feeder and a bog plant so will need keeping moist with regular feeds.(Potting compost nutrients will wash away quickly with regular watering)
The roots form a ball about the same size as the veg ball, so you could use 12"
Don't crowd them as they need light on their stems apparently which is why you are supposed to pull off the outer leaves as the stems swell.
This of course could be another old myth, maybe unproven cos I can't see the farmers doing that!"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple
Location....Normandy France

Which fennel Bill? Florence you will probably need at least 6" standard pot,Herb your best bet would be a 12"ish length of 4" soil pipe as it grows a long tap root.
Celeriac at least 8" pot & put a good layer of clay in the bottom,to stop the water draining straight outHe who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame
Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity

Thats a Florence variety Bill so pots will be fine, you just need to use a decent soil mix that retains moisture rather than free draining MPC,hence the clay base I suggested if you could get hold of a good dollop of puddling clay (think slurry pit) that would be ideal. He who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame
