chilli Hybrids

Hello there i have just started growing chillis and peppers. I have very little knowldge but am enjoying the process. I was hoping to grow from seeds that my fruits hold but am worried about contamination. When should different types of chillis be seperated. Any help ??

What chillies are you growing? Any chillies that are F1 hybrid do not come true to type from their seed.
Although that said, I've grow a couple of tomatoes and they didn't turn out too bad!
If you want to save heirloom or any open pollinated chilli or pepper you can isolate your plants from each other. I keep one in the house. Make net bags to put over each plant, or just bag a branch. You can even use the glue method.

Im Growing chenzo f1s, purple caynee, auroas and scotch bonnet orange. But also peppers. They all close togeather just couldnt find a thread on when they need to be isolated . Its all new to me tbh. That pva job looks cool

F1 seeds won't come out true from any seed you collect, because they are themselves a cross (a hybrid). You need to choose heritage or heirloom varieties really, for seed saving.

I am only growing chenzo f1s. The others are hairlooom

Chillies and peppers will cross so if they're not isolated then you could get anything next year, hot sweet peppers or whatever. Added to this your F1 probably won't come true to type even if isolated. On the plus side you don't need to necessarily isolate the whole plant you can keep individual flowers safe but I find it easier to make a netted cage over the plant and pollinate myself. That said I usually grow a single variety in my greenhouse at home for seeds too and my main cropping ones in the polytunnel at the plot.

I have very little room and have gone bit mad with planting lol. Isit just when plants are flowering ?

Yes, if you want to save pure seed that has not crossed with another chilli or pepper close by you need to bag it / glue it before the flowers open.

Although you could isolate one variety in the house - I kept my habaneros in the house all summer last year.

I have them all in house. Uk weathers bad lol i have way to many. May take 1 of each on different window seals. Thank you for the help
