  • Vertical growing and IKEA

    Hi all!

Just thought I'd share - I went to IKEA recently and came across hanging shoe storage... You know, one of those pocket thingies that you can hang in your wardrobe. I am going to hand that outside and plant herbs in it and see how that goes! I am swamped with slugs here and I'm hoping this will help.. as well as save on space!
SKUBB Hanging shoe organiser w 16 pockets - IKEA
    Only £4.50!
Any of you guys got experience of growing in things like this? I thought it was helpful that the pockets are really quite deep compared to hanging storage I've seen elsewhere...

Hi Sarriss - where've you been all this time ? Hope you weren't lost in IKEA
I think there was something in a recent GYO mag about growing in these hanging thingies. Its the watering that would worry me!!

        Hi VC!
I've been lost with work for quite a while, and last year I was distracted and didn't get much grown at all. I've finally put my greenhouse together though, put up a new fence in my back garden and I'm in full swing with growing stuff again
I'm planning to hang this in the alley outside my kitchen which doesn't get full sun all day, so I'm hoping watering won't be too much of a problem there. I can totally see how it'd be a problem if I hung it on my new fence!
        Good to be back

Oh I wish I could, Bretty.... lol It's very sturdy actually - the top is metal, with both a coat hanger type thing, as well as big metal holes that I'm planning to use for more secure hanging. I'll post a pic once I get it up and planted up

                      Thank you

                      Here it is, planted up!

Dwarf beans at the bottom, some lettuce above that and morning glory along with some kale at the top.

The shoe holder isn't water tight either which is good, but I was surprised how much compost I could fit into each pocket! Let's see how it goes
I've hung it on my garden back wall, so should get lots of light!

Please keep us updated, I'd be interested to see how you get on, I brought a 12 pouch Wall Hogger planter a few weeks back to grow herbs in on my wall outside my kitchen and was amazed at how well they grew. I just brought a couple more to experiment with, the web site is called wallgarden.co.uk they do a range of different type felt planters made from recycled plastic bottles and other recycled materials which make them very strong and durable.

Sarriss hasn't been on the Vine since August- but here's hoping she'll pop back in and let us know.

I've just liked one of her old posts so this thread might catch her eye.

Agree- it'd be really interesting to know how it got on...I like the idea of using the black one!

It was a black one that I have bought. Going to put it on my extension wall that gets plenty of sun. Never thought about doing something like that before, all my plants are in raised beds or pots. Its a decent sized wall so if this turns out well i can add quite a few more
