  • Have my pots got blight!

    Hello all,

I have been to the lottie today having not been for about 5 days, and half of my row of potatos looks like it is dying: I planted them about 2-3 months ago and did a row. On half of the row the top leaves have gone brown and shrivelled. The lower leaves seem fine as is the other half of the row. I have seen similar on other plots although not as bad. (Haven't seen anyone at the lottie to ask) I have read Bexs post about frost damage and i'm only a few miles away from her but this sounds like blight to me! Although the weather lately has not been good and we have had some particularly heavy rains.

I'm a newbie to gyo and my potatos were the first thing i planted on my new plot any suggestions would be greatfully recieved.

alisha, my earlies are exactly the same but it's not blight, it's frost damage from last Monday and Tuesday mornings. My allotment is on an open site and the damage was definately caused by Frost, too early for blight and if you check underneath the leaves, there will be white gunk if it's blight, mine has none.

Phew, Sebbster, big sigh of relief. We had a frost Tuesday/Wednesday last week, so that could (hopefully!!) be the problem.

kitty, my guess it will be hotter in Cornwall that up where I am near Nottingham. Blight will clearly develop like a white bloom on the underside of the leaves as they turn black. Check for this.

If this is not happening and you have had a frost, I'd say it was not blight.
