It looks like the weed fairly rampant in my garden (and most of the rest of town, judging from front gardens I pass), which until this year I had believed to be borage, but now think is actually green alkanet.

They're both (along with comfrey) part of the Boraginaceae family, so have similar looks and properties.

We have areas round here rampant with Borage - started appearing the year after there was a lot if grown in the agricultural fields. Don't seem to see it in the fields now, so presumably there was some incentive to grow it at that time Grrrrr

In fact I think it is Green alkanet as the flower are fairly "flat", whereas I think of the petals of Borage being more tubular - easily pulled off the rest of the flower to put in Pimms (just be way of a random example ... of course )

Chop up a leaf. Comfrey smells like cucumber when crushed.

Strange, I've never found that and the stuff I have is definitely comfrey - weird how our senses work differently. I do know that it smell bloomin' awful when rotted down to make fertiliser though

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

yes, I noticed a really fresh clean smell when I chopped the comfrey y'day. It reminded me of fresh cut grass (I have a v.poor sense of smell, so don't "get" most things)

Can see I'm going to have to be sniffing it next time I'm down the plot, it's ready to harvest anyway so hopefully nobody will notice I'm acting strange again
