          For what its worth I rarely bother with crocks apart from putting a piece of broken pot (usually a curved one so it doesn't block the hole completely) if there is a large drainage hole. I stopped using them partly because I felt they gave slugs somewhere to hide, and partly because I was fed up of finding crocks in my compost heap. I've not noticed any difference to how well the plants grow - they certainly seem to grow fine without them.
