well I finally got round to making some raised beds, 2ft high and what a difference they make, just 2 at the moment, now with carrots and parsnips sown, i can sit on the side, no longer going head first into the soil(I have the most closely inspected soil in the area, I also now know how it smells as well..) the rest will follow as I get any more garden compost and used potted tomato compost (15-20 tubs each year) as I bought enough timber to do the lot, just energy and soil required now...

I love my raised beds. So much easier to deal with than when I just planted into the ground. My garden is v badly designed and the veg patch used to flood. When we moved in, my hubby built 2 large raised beds and is going to do 2 smaller ones, hopefully this year. I find they are easier to keep slugs out of, easier to weed and plant, the weeds are restricted far more than on open ground and they don't flood. It's easier to water and I seem to be able to keep track of what I have planted more easily as well. This could just be me though! I find it easier to net things as well when they are in raised beds

We've been doing it for years here in the North East! Theyr'e called 'Leek trenches' and can be made from wood, paving slabs, tin sheeting, doors, bricks, breeze blocks or anthing that will hold back the soil.
Bricks or breeze blocks are my favourite as they are asthetically pleasing, can be rendered and painted if you like, and will last a lifetime. My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Well done. That will make life easier....Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.
Everything is worthy of kindness.
