  • First year on the plot!

    Hi, my name is Dale,

This year I have started growing fruit and veg for the very first time and I think I have bitten off more than I can chew!

My greenhouse is full to the brim with pots and plants and seed trays, I have over a dozen raised beds in my garden and an allotment besides! Does anyone have any tips on how to keep track of everything? I'm not expecting too much in my first year but it would be nice. :P

I'm growing everything from tomatoes and potatoes to Chilean guava and electric daisies and enjoying every second of it!

Glad to be part of the gardening community!

You sound very industrious I'm first year too but I'm taking things a bit slower... It's not a race, gardening is supposed to be relaxing! That's said, it is hard to keep trac of what's what so I write in a diary when I sow seeds and when I prune things and the books with 'month by month' sections are very useful at jogging my memory as to when things need to be planted\propagated/pruned etc.

Welcome to the Vine. You say you have trouble keeping track of everything, how about a notebook? Or an Excel spreadsheet.

Could you add your location (nearest town) to your profile please? It will then show on your posts and will save you having to keep telling us where you are. Helps when giving advice too, because growing conditions vary so much depending where you are.

Buy another greenhouse or two lol,I've just got my third oneand I'll probably still run out of room!!!this year I have been later with certain things but can't see that being a bad thing,as we have had terrible weather up until now really,as suggested a note pad is def needed.

I'm not having much trouble yet just made a few mistakes like planting on the early side of packet instructions without thinking about it being cold up here in Yorkshire and I didn't notice the greenfly in my greenhouse and lost a couple of tomato plants and as things progress I'm wondering how I'm going to keep track on when to harvest and how to keep a lookout for pests and diseases (being colorblind doesn't help lol) and how to keep track of hardening plants off when I have so many at different stages.

I'm just winging it atm and it's going ok I think :P

Yeah my greenhouse is very cramped at the moment, thinking of making a mini one with perspex panes for seeds/cuttings

Yea it does sound pretty industrious haha, I like to keep myself busy though and want plenty of produce to pickle and jam for Christmas gifts to family
