Seed potatoes

All my local GC's have virtually run out of seed potatoes or are selling them off very cheap.

I asked yesterday whether they will be getting any more salad or main crops in, considering you can plant right up to the end of september for under cover crops for xmas and they said no, that was it.

So where do people get the spuds from later in the year ? I haven't got my first earlies in yet and getting worried there won't be any seed potatoes later on in summer.

Carlingford are the usual winter crop spuds. They usually arrive in the GC's later in the year.

There are two potato planting times. Most people plant during March and April, and some take a risk and plant "Christmas" potatoes in September. Garden centres don't stock them in between because there is no need for them. Quite a few online companies sell late cropping potatoes. I know some people tried planting potatoes outside last year in September and given a mild winter I'd be interested to know how they did.

So where do people get the spuds from later in the year ?

I plant some spuds, in bags, for Winter Harvest in the first week of August. I get them from JBA (as they supply a cool-stored / conditioned seed potato specially for that time / market. They aint cheap though ...

I think September is getting late - running out of growing time (with sufficient light) to bring them on enough. Although ... mine die down quite a long time before we actually get to Xmas, but as they are still in-soil and attached to mother plant, they seem to taste fairly New Potato "like"

Andy have you though of looking in your local £1 shop. I noticed yesterday that mine still had a few in. They were well sprouted mind you. Also Wilkos had a few bags left. Might not be the variety you are after but worth a look maybe. Good luck
