Cucumbers

Hi everyone! I have a little cucumber plant in my little plastic greenhouse which has about 4 leaves and is standing about 6 inches high. If I plant it in a big pot (bucket sized) will I still get a crop this year?

Quick answer - yes! I usually pot things on gradually - so not from a tiny pot to a bucket in one go. This gives the plant time to throw out new roots without having too much soil to contend with. (I know it would in the ground, but pots are different!) Pot compost can get a bit sour if it's continually watered but the nutrients aren't being used by a growing plant.

Hope I haven't confused you? Some of my cukes are now in 6" pots but when they start getting to be teenagers I'll pot them on to 10".

do you know if they are indoor or outdoor cucumbers? I have 3 Telegraph in pots which are about 12" (although as flummery says I got up to this in stages) and they are lookiong much healthier than the Marketmore that I planted out. You'll probably want to consider staking or netting it once it get's to about a foot or so - mine started to lean and looked a bit unhappy but were much happier once I tied them to a cane.

I've just planted my Marketmore out on the plot. I've got 3 plants and they are all 6-8 inches high. Have created a ridge for them out of wire for them to scramble up and to keep the fruit off the ground and so far they seem ok.

The best tip I got for how to tell when it is time to move a plant to a bigger pot was:

'When the roots are showing clearly through the holes in the bottom of the pot, it is time to go up a pot size (or 2).'

It has worked well for me and I hope you find it helpful too.
