Got a question!

Coming from humble beginnings, "Asparagus" was always portrayed as a "posh mans food"

But set up a bed I did last March!


Let it do it's bit, ferned, chopped, mulch it in "Spring" etc!

Have harvested a few today! And we're lovely!

But has they say, leave it till year 3

But there like tree's!



So do I just leave em to get on with it?

It will benefit from being left to establish a bit more although you can crop a year sooner with crowns than from seeds.

Assuming you planted 1 year old crowns last year . . . you can take a small harvest this year, very small . . . and normal harvests from next year onwards.

If you can resist this year and take no harvest you should get an even better harvest next year.

I planted crowns this year (Ginjlin and Backlim) and also have seedlings of Sweet Purple which I will sex in the late Summer and discard the females. Then plant the 1 yr old male crowns, hopefully at least 13 crowns, in April 2015. I will then have a bed of 34 plants should just about be enough for the two of us

Yes, the "trees" will "fern up" like they did last year

You'll need to stop the ferns falling over though. I have a post in each corner of the bed, and a strong string around the perimeter, but although that stops them falling out of the bed they still lean a lot down the length of the bed.

You assume right Raptor, they were indeed 1yr old crowns, which is why I came to the conclusion I'd get away with harvesting just a few

Yup, I do my Broadies just the same too. Expect the Asparagus "ferns" to grow all though - maybe even 6 feet - so quite a lot of weight if they decide to flop. Yours are against the fence though, so presumably they don't catch the wind, which will help.
