For me its a balance between taste and what grows well on my plot. I like King Edward but they don't do well. I like Kestrel and they do very well. I like Charlotte but they don't do well, I'm trying Swift this year so we'll see.
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
Interesting comments What sort of soil do you have? (or is it exposed or somesuch that adversely effects the Spud plants?)
Silty black acid loam which dries very quickly to dark grey..When I come back from the allotment I look lile a coal miner. The allotment holder before me was a chimney sweep so maybe this is why my soil is so black!
Potatoes grow fine as long as I am selective about which varieties I grow. One good thing is that I don't have a high incidence of keel slug, but I grow Kestrel which has some slug resistance just in case.
Duke of York do well but Red Duke of York were rubbish.
I stick with PFA,Desiree and Maxine for maincrop,Kestrel for second early and Duke of York for earlies.
Each year I try a new variant of early spud, this year its Swift. Its well named as it seems to be fast growing. I'll just have to wait and see what it crops like and whether its tasteful or not?

I usually do kestrel because they make the finest chips on the planet. Supposed to be a second early, but I always give them a week or three extra depending on the fruitfulness of a good furtle. Maincrop are desiree and king teds. Have done maris bard for earlies in the past, but would rather use available space for kestrel.
