  • growing veg in greenhouse, when to plant it out?

    Hi all,

I`m still quite a new gardener here, I`ve been growing some turnips & kale in my unheated small greenhouse,i did plant some of it out a few weeks ago, but most of what i planted outside hasnt grown much, the veg in greenhouse is doing well though, with much bigger leaves....any ideas when I should plant them out?

    Stuart

p.s i have one exception to this, a turnip i planted mid winter in the greenhouse, that only had 2cm long roots, is growing well outside, you can see the turnips appearing!

Never tried turnips in pots for planting out but for brassicas including kale I would let them get 2-4 true leaves, so about 10cm tall, before planting out. However you must harden them off over a week or two before planting out, as they have been grown in your cosy greenhouse! The ones outside May not have put on much top growth but you can be sure there's been plenty going on below soil.

Hi Stuart, both Turnips & Brassicas were planted out about a month ago & all are doing really well. They are quite tough.

You quite often find that when you transplant something, growth seems to slow down for a couple of weeks while it adjusts itself to its new conditions. They'll soon take off, don't worry . They'll actually be happier outside than inside once the warmer weather starts.
