They do grow pretty big ...

But it's a bit early to be lifting them yet. End of June at the earliest.

people said last year about cutting them off on onions etc..except when the water gets in there it could rot the bulb...im not 100% sure on this but to avoid risk i cut mine off then put cling film on as a plaster/waterproofer???

Planted huge elephant garlic cloves, green has died away, very small return!
              Second attempt, giving up now!

I had no luck with garden centre ones, they were so hard almost like plastic, but have with ones passed on from another gardener,as they were softer and fresher,so spring into life easier, another way is,instead of planting straight into the ground, part sink them into pot of compost, then bury them in the ground when you see some green shoots, take them out the pots first though,by that time you know you gave a goer with good roots, pot size, aprox 3in,

Elephant garlic scapes can cost a fortune (bought some last year at Gardeners World). The chap recommended sautéing them and they were lovely. I'm going to let some of mine grow scapes this year

I planted mine out in October and nothing came up. I think they must have rotted in the wet. I was told they need a period of cold to cause the cloves to split so a large bulb of cloves is formed. I love the taste of roasted garlic so I was hoping for an even better one from the elephant. I'll have to research and try again next year.
