asparagus crowns showing

Hi folks,

I planted 12 asparagus crowns 3 years ago and now getting some good stalks from them , the only problem is the crowns are starting to show very near to the surface.
Would there be any problems topping up the soil..
If it is possible when would be the best time?
Also what would be best to use, home made compost, normal soil or a mix?
Any help would be great

I mulch my asparagus bed every autumn when I cut down the spent fronds.

My compost heap (only roughly composted) goes into the greenhouse beds, 50:50 with manure, and at the end of the season goes onto the Asparagus bed - lovely fine mulch
