  • Moving tomato plants

I've got some balconi yellows in drainpipe pots which I have now realised are way too small and the plants are rather stunted

I am thinking of getting some growbags and transferring them to these. However all four plants have flowers on and I was wondering if I would lose them if I moved them or if they do drop is it safe to assume more will grow given the increased root space?

Silly me - trying to use every available space without thinking about it.

I don't think they will mind the move - especially if you are giving them more root space. I grow toms in the flower buckets you can buy from Morrisons and they seem to be quite happy in those. I just feed them a little more often than recommended if they are looking poor.

Mine are usually in flower when I pot them into their final big pots (and in the greenhouse border, come to that.) Just make sure they don't get a check - feed and water carefully (i.e. don't drown!). Best of luck. They should be fine.

Thanks shirl and flum. I will make that a must do job for this week. I've a nice wide top to the wall at the back of the garden which is beautifully sunny so I think they may do well up there.

I put mine into pots in growbags last week when the flowers were tiny -the plants havent grown any taller (worryingly!) but the flowers didnt mind the move at all, they seem perfectly happy - even the one with the broken stem. Flum was right, it seems to have healed up nicely so I guess tom plants are pretty resiliant.
