    That's a kind thought GL but I will take you up on it next year when I am confident of no failures.

      You know BM the kind of thing you have done and intend to go on doing is what put the Great into Great Britain. The inquiring mind is what will ensure the survival of our species and all the species that inhabit this planet. Not taking established practises as sacrosanct, wanting to know WHY, is what drives us on.
      You have my respect Sir.

          Thanks for missing me my wife has had some serious health issues and as we foster two men with learning dissabilities the work load is all on my shoulders at the mo. But the most difficult one has gone to his family for a week today so that will help a bit. I hall be cooking the Christmas dinner but i always do that anyway.

            Re-reading this thread ignited my curiosity as to whether I could grow spuds through the winter given the right variety. I found 10 Osprey hiding in a cupboard so to kill the cat & finally put this thread to bed, I have put 1 spud in 10 buckets, they have all got their own bubble jacket to help them through so lets see how they look come mid Februry (18 weeks).........I'll post some pics along the way if I feel it relevant.

              Bubble jackets are good BM, if you can put some polystyrene underneath them it will also help enormously towards reducing/preventing heat transfer from the soil into the floor/window sill

                How strange, I was reading through this thread last night and now up it pops today.
                Good luck, I will be watching with interest.

                And when your back stops aching,
                And your hands begin to harden.
                You will find yourself a partner,
                In the glory of the garden.

                    Good idea BB, I have lots of timber knocking about, I wonder if this will have the same effect.

                    • My best christmad day new spud crop was from wrapped tubs standing on a pallet stuffed with straw, next season I want to try growing over-winter spuds in polystyrene fish boxes in the blowaway cloche.

                      • Funny you should mention pallets as I have access to as many as I want so was thinking of just getting the one, sawing it in half & stuffing it with shredded paper.

                          • I may have a better & easier idea. I have loads of buckets so if I put a good layer of shredded paper in the bottom of an embty bucket then stand the tattie bucket inside, I guess that would work.

                            • Possibly, but there might a couple of things to think about ;

                              Wieght of the spud bucket might crush the paper into a solid mass (reducing it's thermal properties)
                              Any excess water draining onto the paper will turn it into a wet pulp ( ditto ^^)

                              • Point taken BB, my intentions are once foliage starts to show (wishful thinking on my part), I will transfer the buckets into the greenhouse & sit them on bags of compost so hopefully the roots will go through the bucket into the bags.
